Institute of Space Technology is the pioneer Institute of Pakistan, celebrating World Space Week since 2005 in collaboration with Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO). IST has the honor of organizing maximum events in Pakistan during WSW every year with the enthusiastic participation of its students and faculty.

IST inspires students of schools and colleges for WSW activities and celebrations. The number of events, participating students and schools has increased tremendously in the last ten years. The various space themed competitions, in the area of literature, fine arts, visual arts, performing arts, computer graphics and gaming, aero modeling, water rocket and space models making, space technology innovation and applications were held in yesteryears. IST has rendered services for the science teachers of private and public sector schools in the form of space technology teachers training workshop, space school, space caravan, space Biblio rendezvous, space career station, space awareness lectures and also broadcasted live lectures by the space experts to different universities of Pakistan and neighboring countries via Pakistan Higher Education Commission (HEC) video link.

World Space Week 2017 at IST
World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events, firstly the October 4, 1957, the Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration and secondly the October 10, 1967, the signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activates of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.

The WSW 2017 celebrations at IST are augmented with several new events in order to create the awareness among the students, teachers and general masses about the peaceful uses of Space Science, technology and applications especially under the umbrella of WSW-2017 Theme, “Exploring New Worlds in Space”. The broad area of activities include the competitions in the categories of Space Knowledge, Space Creative Writing , Space Fine Arts, Space Technology Application, Space Graphics, Space Gaming, Space Mathematica, Space Visual arts, Space Photography, Space Performing Arts. It also provides the Space Technology Awareness Arena and Space Technology Labs Expedition. It will also provide a plan for Teachers Training workshop, Space School and Space Technology awareness lectures

“Exploring New Worlds in Space”
Each year, the World Space Week Association (WSWA) selects a theme for the upcoming World Space Week (WSW) to provide a focus of the activities and events that take a place throughout the world, during 4-10 October. WSWA is pleased to announce the 2017 World Space Week Theme: “Exploring New Worlds in Space”.

The 2017 World Space Week Theme is an outward facing theme that serves to inspire the World. It puts as a focal point astrobiology missions like New Horizons (NASA’s first mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt); feats on engineering such as Lockheed Martin’s Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (NASA’s first spacecraft designed to facilitate long-duration, human-rated deep space exploration of new worlds) and efforts of New Space actors such as Space X (revolutionary space technology projects with ultimate goal of enabling people to inhabit other planets like Mars) and other entities with a vision for exploration and utilization of extraterrestrial resources, such as metals from asteroids, water from the Moon, and unlimited solar energy in Earth orbit.
